"God willing, I will use my body to make a perfect explosion and kill as many Israelis as possible," he said as he sipped sweet tea in an unmarked office in Gaza City.

And it isn't for economic or educational reasons.

He is a father of eight, well educated with a middle-class background and has even taken the unusual step of letting his family in on his plans. "They are proud of me," he said.

And a significant percentage of the population supports it.

"...in Gaza, public approval [of homicide bombings] is so high that even those who oppose the tactic rarely do so openly for fear they will be branded collaborators.

"Despair and revenge are the main ingredients," said Gaza psychiatrist Eyad Sarraj. "It makes it possible to take something morally wrong and worship it as something sacred."

It will take an event of earthquake proportions to shake this outlook loose from their society. Otherwise, how can they be allowed to live next door?
